Police have ruled out intentional explosion as the cause of the blast on a ferry carrying tourists between Bali and Lombok which killed two people, while injuring 13 others on Thursday.
Police said a short circuit near the fuel tank of the boat could have been the root cause.
The explosion occurred about 200 metres from the port of departure, Padangbai, and was preceded by smoke billowing from the engine.
Karangasem District Police Chief, Sugeng Sudarso said the ‘Gili Cat 2’ fast boat was carrying 35 passengers and four crew members at the time of the explosion.
Last year, a series of small explosions hit a ferry crossing between Bali and Lombok, injuring dozens of tourists.
