Underground Search For Miners Underway
In South Africa, a 42-year-old man was found in a critical condition when emergency medical services and a mine rescue team went underground on September 12 in search of an unknown number of illegal miners trapped inside of Langlaagte, an old unused mine shaft in Johannesburg.
The man is the tenth victim to have come out of the mine.
Police said the illegal miners, known as zama zama miners, went into the Langlaagte site, Johannesburg’s oldest gold mine, on September 7, followed by 16 friends who attempted to find and rescue them after they failed to emerge.
Authorities were unable to confirm the exact number of miners that have resurfaced due to reports of some having escaped the shaft in fear of being arrested.
So far, seven miners have been arrested.
